Classes
Your First Art Quilt
This is a class designed for traditional quilters who are used to using patterns and rulers but want to venture outside the box and try new things. A small quilt, approximately 16” X 20”, will be made in this 1 or 2-day class. An abbreviated review of the elements and principles of design start off the class. Students are then introduced to a variety of techniques that ultimately result in the creation of a small, original one-of-a-kind art quilt. Some of the techniques include fabric collage, fabric painting, and basic embellishment techniques. The 2-day class includes several additional techniques and more supervised in-class working time. |

Playful Portraits
This is a fun 1-day class where students create a portrait of themselves, friends or family members, or imaginary creatures. No patterns or rulers are allowed. A fun-loving open mind is required. Students are led step-by-step through the process of creating a head-and-shoulders portrait using a variety of fabric scraps or fat quarters. Embellishment techniques are explored and used on the portrait. |
Thread Sculpture
Create unique free-flowing art objects or one-of-a-kind jewelry in this class. Using only your sewing machine, water soluble film and thread, marvelous works of art appear. A small art form, broach or pair of earrings can be completed in a 1-day class session. |

Photographing Your Art Quilts
It is important to record your work not only for insurance purposes but also for posterity. Friends and family love to see your latest work but after ‘quilty’ gifts have been given, photos and scraps are all that remain. Learn a few simple photography tricks that will help you take your own professional looking photographs of your fabric creations. This is a 2-3 hour PowerPoint lecture-discussion class that is designed to create awareness when taking photographs of fiber art. |
Fabric Collage
What do you do with your scraps of fabric? How do you add shape so that your quilts are not all rectangular or square yet they hold their unique shape when displayed on a wall? Creating fabric collages is the answer. It is a great way to use leftover fabrics (or new fat quarters) to create uniquely shaped art quilts for the wall. Techniques taught in the class include the use of a stiff interfacing, raw edge finishes, and various embellishment methods. The class can be taught in 1½ days but a full 2 days are best. |

The Elements and Principles of Design Applied to Art Quilts
This is an interactive PowerPoint class designed to create awareness of why some things work and other things don’t work when planning and creating art quilts. After the PowerPoint discussion, students use fabric scraps and glue to create examples of the elements and principles of design thus creating their own reference tool for future use. The class can be taught as only the lecture in a half day but is most effective when taught as a 1-day hands-on class. |
